A musical reading of the eponymous text by Jean Genet

Dedicated to the Trio Polycordes: Florentino Calvo, mandolin - Jean-Marc Zvellenreuther, guitar - Sandrine Chatron, harp.

Duration: ca. 8'

At the origin of this work, the unsuccessful project of a musical reading of Jean Genet's Funambule .

From the preparatory work was born this composition, a sort of free reading of the text.

  • The form of the text gave me formal orientations: elevation, spiral (constant return of themes/motifs presented from different angles (variants)).

  • Some images gave me musical patterns/figures: sequins, taut thread, jump, fall...

  • Aspects of Jean Genet's character guided the energy that underlies the work: childlike tenderness, "outbursts", passion, ability to communicate extraordinary energy to his tightrope walker lover Abdhala so that he gives the best of himself...

Finally, the raw, but sublimated eroticism, combining mire with absolute purity, contributed to a very contrasting, colorful and extremely changing musical writing, with multiple patterns of very differentiated characters (from noisy sounds to the purest sounds), alternating moments of "on edge" poetry with moments of great vivacity/strength, tending towards an ever greater elevation constantly thwarted or in precarious balance.
