Hypertonie for solo cello (1999/2001)

Hypertonie - Christophe Roy
00:00 / 00:00

Dedicated to Christophe Roy

Created on December 8/9, 2000 at the Dunois theater in Paris.

Duration : approx. 10'. Éditions Dhalmann (obligatory mention on the program)

This work was born out of my encounter with cellist Christophe Roy, whose perfect technical mastery of his instrument, his musicality and his commitment to promoting today's music have always impressed me.

The title Hypertonie is a tribute to his way of playing where the cello is as much the instrument of the greatest delicacies with inflections so close to the human voice, as intense tensions.

I like to think of the form of this work as a fantasy with multiple colorful motifs, akin to those “cabinets of wonders” where European sovereigns brought together objects and works of art from hitherto unknown regions of the world.

There is beyond the collection of objects - here sound - a secret unity made of childlike wonder and love vis-à-vis the " petits riens", these little details "_cc781905 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_insignifiants ” of life, but imbued with poetry, tenderness, humor and sometimes violence.
